Can a lack of protection at one business lead to potential catastrophe at another? It may be more likely than we want to think. The cyberattack on an Illinois water plant is a case in point. That the attack didn't actually take place hardly matters -- as an emergency planner I know a possible scenario when I see one.

Feds: Illinois Water Plant Was Not Hacked (Or Was It?)

Last week the media -- including TechSecurityToday -- published reports of how a Illinois water plant had been hacked by Russians, causing damage to a water pump. It now turns out that by the time news of the "incident" leaked to the media, the Department of Homeland Security had decided no attack actually took place. We just didn't hear that news until yesterday.
